Kevin Smith Posts His Verdict Of Justice League: “There Are Moments That Made My Heart Soar”

Speaking on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, comic book scribe and all-around DC expert Kevin Smith has given his official verdict of Justice League.

As Justice League begins to dust itself down in preparation for a crucial second weekend, Warner Bros. executives will be crossing their fingers in the hope that audiences will still flock to see the Zack Snyder-directed tentpole – you know, despite the avalanche of middling reviews.

Financially, it’s been a similar story for the Justice League of America; at only $94 million, the starry mega-film endured the lowest domestic opening of any movie in the DC Extended Universe thus far, which doesn’t exactly bode well for Justice League‘s box office ambitions.

$600 million is said to be the current target if it’s to really turn a profit, though it’s hard to see Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon’s big-budget blockbuster as anything other than a misfire – no matter which way you spin the box office numbers.

And though he’s well aware of the film’s shortcomings, comic book scribe and all-around DC expert Kevin Smith has revealed his preliminary verdict on the Hollywood Babble-On podcast (via ComicBook.com), where he was joined by Ralph Garman.

I saw Justice League twice already. I liked it. I liked it. There’s stuff in it that I really dug, stuff that I was happy, I mean it’s weird this is like, I’m not going to review the movie and stuff, but these are moments that f**ing made my heart soar.

After two viewings, Smith got a little more specific about one of the film’s many cameos, so if you’ve yet to catch Justice League on the big screen, avert thy eyes!

And so, they showed an alien you’ve never seen before, but he had a green energy and a Lantern ring. So, the idea was like f*** lanterns even back in the first age like were defenders of the galaxy and they came to earth to help. So, there is this one moment in this battle, this throwaway moment, where a f*** lantern is killed and he f*** hits the ground and all of a sudden, the ring shoots off his finger and takes off into space. Oh my god sh** like that, seeing that on the big screen after reading that in comics for so long and watching Ryan Reynolds do it once was really wonderful. So, there’s moments like that that really did it for me.

Justice League is now screening in theaters across the globe, and it’ll be fascinating to see how the pic fares this coming weekend now that the review embargo has been lifted. Indeed, Jason Momoa is of the belief that there was enough material for two movies – which was the original plan, by the way – leading fans to ask the question: will Warner Bros. release a director’s cut on home video?
