The Last Jedi Fan Theories “Haven’t Nailed The Big Stuff,” According To Rian Johnson

Luke Skywalker wandering over to the dark side? How about Rey succumbing to the allure of Supreme Leader Snoke? And don’t even get us started on the pint-sized porgs.

Yes, the rumor mill for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is operating at full tilt, and with nine kinds of fan theories already ricocheting off the walls of the Internet, the sequel’s director Rian Johnson recently waded through the speculation to give his own two cents on the current Star Wars gossip.

And though he naturally refrained from mentioning specifics, Johnson admitted that fans “haven’t really nailed the big stuff” when it comes to The Last Jedi‘s actual story. Which is just as well, given there are only 10 days standing between now and the film’s release.

I mean, [I’ve read] nothing that’s really nailed big stuff. No, which… I love reading the fan theories, you know, having been a Star Wars fan myself and been on the other side of the curtain most of my life it’s pretty cool to be back behind, like peeking through saying seeing like I would have people guessing.

But if there’s one unanswered question that continues to generate a ton of buzz, it’s Rey’s parentage. Is she a Kenobi? Or someone else entirely? The fact that her surname has been safely stowed away in the Lucasfilm vaults leads us to believe that it’ll have a major bearing on the current trilogy.

Either way, Daisy Ridley was also in attendance at The Last Jedi‘s LA press junket, and addressed Rey’s heritage as so:

I mean, I’ve read a fan theory about Immaculate Conception. In fact, that was the only one that I read because someone directed me toward it and I was like you should get to work. Immaculate Conception. Then someone told me that I was actually Snoke or something or other, and it was time travel and I do think it’s hilarious that there’s this like great character and everyone was trying to attribute it to another character.

Tracking for a mighty $200m-plus opening weekend in North America – an opening weekend that would crown The Last Jedi as 2017’s biggest domestic debut – Rian Johnson’s Star Wars sequel bows on December 15th. It’s merely the beginning of Johnson’s journey, though, what with an entirely new trilogy in the pipeline beyond Episode IX.
