The New Mutants Channel The Frighteners On First Theatrical Poster

Say what you want about Fox and their X-Men Cinematic Universe, but this writer counts himself among those who actually favor it over what Disney's Marvel Studios have done in most cases. In short, I enjoy the films focusing on mutants because they're played a bit more straight-faced and tend to take more chances. Seriously, I can't help but wonder if indeed the Magic Kingdom becomes the new Genosha - thanks to Disney possibly buying Fox - there'll be room for ballsier flicks like Deadpool and Logan.

That being said, I and those who share my sentiments can do nothing but sit back and see how it all unfolds. But, in the meantime, we have several X-Men related offerings to take in during 2018, the first of which is The New Mutants. Admittedly, I was somewhat skeptical at first, but the first trailer made me a believer. Again, it’s that risk taking I spoke of that allows filmmakers to put fresh spins on the superhero genre.

Based on “The Demon Bear Saga” and said to be the first part in a trilogy, this movie helmed by Josh Boone looks to be something you might not want to watch alone. As such, it comes as no surprise that the studio would want to hammer that point home by releasing a poster that reflects the film’s tone.

From where I’m sitting, it looks like they may be paying homage to Peter Jackson’s 1996 picture, The Frighteners, which starred Michael J. Fox. Sure, that may have been quite different in tone, but horror aficionados will likely notice the similarities shared by the respective posters.

The New Mutants opens in theaters on April 13, 2018.
