The Stormtrooper formerly known as FN-2187 was undoubtedly one of the big breakouts of The Force Awakens.
John Boyega’s renegade, who now goes by the name ‘Finn’, later joined the ranks of the Resistance in a bid to fight back against his former employers. It’s a fascinating, deeply compelling arc that perfectly reflects Finn’s inner conflict (“I was raised to do one thing, but I’ve got nothing to fight for”), and it’s one that’ll continue through the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi next Friday.
Granted, Boyega’s Resistance fighter still needs to be nursed back to health before his “dark mission” can begin in earnest – you can thank the bacta tank for Finn’s speedy recovery – and if there’s one thing that defines the erstwhile Stormtrooper, it’s loyalty.
I think he does feel an innate need to show loyalty to those he cares about. So once you’re a brother of Finn, you’re a brother forever. That’s something that’s quite interesting about him.
Finn is not without his flaws, of course; as John Boyega tells ComicBook.com, the Resistance officer is guilty of jumping to conclusions.
I think sometimes he gets into his own head. Assumes that a situation is going to go bad and doesn’t try. But he’s going to learn how to change that in this film.
Make no mistake, Finn will be confronting his deepest fears in Episode VIII, after earlier promos showed Boyega’s turncoat in Imperial garb. Perhaps he’s infiltrating the First Order to gain some precious intel about Snoke’s plan? If so, he’ll likely carry out that mission under the watchful eye of DJ, Benicio Del Toro’s smuggler who is neither hero nor villain – he’s just a damn good hacker with no real allegiances.
Expect Finn’s journey to continue when The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.
