It’s rather fitting that the Deadpool 2 marketing campaign is as cheeky and unpredictable as its titular lead.
From Thanksgiving treats to Bob Ross-inspired trailers (“and remember, hugs and drugs”), the Powers That Be have wholeheartedly embraced the Merc’s irreverent style, which, in turn, has allowed Ryan Reynolds to do what he does best: serve up funny and often deadpan tweets to his legions of followers. And the actor’s latest post certainly honors tradition.
Via Twitter, Ryan Reynolds has unveiled a striking piece of artwork that imagines Deadpool and Cable in the Creation of Adam, Michelangelo’s biblical painting that’s etched into the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. But this is not the Vatican City. And let’s face it: neither Wade Wilson nor Nathan Summers are terribly religious. Instead, the tongue-in-cheek promo is designed to drum up excitement for the second coming, as a fully-costumed Wade reaches out longingly for Cable’s firearm.
Here’s the official caption from Ryan Reynolds: “Some might call this creation a masterpiece, but to me it’s just well hung art to be shared with the world.”
And because Fox’s untitled Deadpool sequel is releasing in close proximity to Avengers: Infinity War, comic book fans will be treated to two villainous performances from Josh Brolin – Cable and Thanos, Marvel’s Mad Titan.
As you’ll be able to see from today’s spoof painting, Brolin spent hours in the make-up chair to properly harness the character of Nathan Summers – the prosthetic arm, the glinting, cybernetic eye, that cute little teddy bear – and we’re hoping David Leitch’s forthcoming sequel gives Brolin enough screen time to really spread his wings. He’s not the only new face, of course, given Deadpool 2 also stars Zazie Beetz as Domino, an expert marksman and true fan-favorite.
Exactly how she factors in the story is a total mystery at this point, but with a June 2018 release date in place, we imagine it won’t be too long before the Merc begins unraveling his many secrets.
