Originally dreamed up by Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker and Jonathan Hickman in 2012, the comic brought together a whole host of famous faces – namely Captain America, Cyclops, Hulk, Iceman, Iron Man, Magneto, Spider-Man, Storm – for what turned out to be a crossover event like no other. And thanks to Disney’s newly-unveiled takeover of 20th Century Fox, a film version of Avengers Vs. X-Men may soon become a reality.

It’s yet to be formally announced, of course, and until Disney and Fox iron out the kinks, it’s best approaching any development with a heightened degree of skepticism. Because let’s face it: an acquisition of this size will likely take a full year to consummate – if not more.

But to keep us ticking over, one talented Reddit user put together a neat post-credits scene for Avengers 4 which teases the arrival of the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, the characters themselves don’t appear here, but it’s a clever stinger regardless and you can check it out down below.

My take on the post-credits scene in Avengers 4

Again, it’s not the most thrilling piece of work, but it’s a timely reminder that no longer will Marvel’s most famous characters be placed on separate tracks; instead, they’ll exist within a single, shared universe: the MCU.  Incorporating the likes of Wolverine and the Silver Surfer may seem like a logistical nightmare on paper, particularly after 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But if Kevin Feige is to be believed, Phase 4 will herald a relatively blank slate for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – perhaps that soft reboot will have something to do with the Infinity Stones? – and with so many characters to choose from, Feige and Co. have been left facing an embarrassment of riches.

All of this won’t take shape until after Fox’s current slate though, which continues via The New Mutants in 2018. It’s a decidedly darker take on the X-Men franchise, while Deadpool 2, arguably the perfect palette cleanser, will follow on June 1st.
