It was an encounter long foretold.
Marvel’s God of Thunder crossing paths with the Guardians was initially teased back at D23, when an early Avengers: Infinity War promo showed an unconscious Thor crashing into the Milano’s windshield, presumably after a nasty encounter with Thanos.
Much to the bemusement of Rocket Racoon, Chris Hemsworth’s Norse god is then brought on board, where he’s nursed back to health by Mantis (Pom Klementieff), who may or may not turn out to be the Avengers’ secret weapon against Marvel’s Mad Titan come 2018.
One way or another, USA Today has now served up an official promo for Infinity War that sees a curious Mantis watching over the God of Thunder. Based on the glowing antennas, it’s nigh on certain that Klementieff’s goofy hero is performing her psychic empathy on Thor, as the Guardians of the Galaxy try to piece together exactly what happened to the Odinson.
On paper, it’s a tantalizing team-up, and the mere thought of Tony Stark and Captain America joining forces with their alien allies is enough to leave Robert Downey Jr.’s 5-year-old son rooted to the edge of his seat.

“Now I get to tell him that I know those guys,” says the actor. “Maybe I can even introduce him to a raccoon one day, if he’s lucky. That’s the hardest for me, because I look at Evans and I just to want to go over and smell him or tell him he looks cool in those sunglasses when he’s walking over to have lunch. And then I’m just staring daggers at him, getting mad. But even that relationship is going to take a turn.”
Thor, meanwhile, is expected to trade Mjolnir for Jarnbjorn when the lights go down on May 4th and, let’s face it, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will need all the help they can muster if they’re really to defeat Thanos and restore peace.
Dubbed Marvel’s “deadliest showdown,” Avengers: Infinity War is on course to hit theaters in May of 2018, and it may well bring the curtain down on Drax’s journey.
