Star Wars: The Last Jedi Crosses $1 Billion At The Box Office

Building on that huge, record-setting debut, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has now passed $1 billion at the global box office. Well, that certainly didn’t take long.

Building on that huge, record-setting debut, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has now passed $1 billion at the global box office. Thanks to a stellar weekend, the Lucasfilm sequel is simmering at $1.07 billion worldwide, and will only continue to climb even higher as the weeks go on, given that there’s no real competition in its way for the next little while.

The split currently stands at $483 million domestically and $523 million overseas, which is certainly impressive. Then again, given that analysts are predicting a finish in the $1.6 billion range, it’ll still come in considerably lower than J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, which stormed to a monstrous $2.06 billion when it released in 2015.

For comparison’s sake, at this point in its theatrical run, the aforementioned franchise revival was already at $686 million domestically and would go on to pull in a staggering $936 million on home turf. That being said, no one ever expected The Last Jedi to pass The Force Awakens and with only a 12% drop this weekend, the film’s still in great shape and should have no trouble hitting the estimates.

Besides, between it and Beauty and the Beast, not to mention the studio’s other releases, Disney has had a monstrous year and once again, ruled over the box office. And now, with their recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the future is only looking even brighter for them. In other words, be prepared to see the Mouse House dominate Hollywood for the next little while.

But circling back to that galaxy far, far away, and as we said above, there’s really no competition standing in the way of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and box office glory. The next major releases won’t be here until February, at which point Fifty Shades Freed, Black Panther, Cloverfield 3 and more will storm into theaters. By that point, though, Rian Johnson’s pic will have already cleaned up, easily making its way to $1.06 billion, if not more.
