Jason Statham Features In High Resolution Image From The Meg

Ever since Jaws caused moviegoers to be afraid of going back into the water in 1975, the concept of rampaging sharks has been in a staple in the horror, thriller and science fiction genres, often blurring the lines between them. And while the topic of today's discussion isn't nearly as over the top as the likes of Sharknado, Sharktopus and Ghost Shark, it sure has been generating its share of online buzz as of late.

Ever since Jaws caused moviegoers to be afraid of going back into the water in 1975, the concept of rampaging sharks has been in a staple in the horror, thriller and science fiction genres, often blurring the lines between them. And while the topic of today’s discussion isn’t nearly as over the top as the likes of Sharknado, Sharktopus and Ghost Shark, it sure has been generating its share of online buzz as of late.

We are, of course, talking about The Meg. In it, “a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon.”

So, there you have it: Family Guy‘s Meg Griffin is not the chief antagonist as I originally pictured.

Actually, those of you who have been anticipating this flick are well aware that it’s been part of a strange ballad, being postponed to summer of this year. Truth be told, this is happening all too often these days, as the marketplace becomes evermore crowded with superhero movies and other big budget blockbusters.

Anyway, even though promo material for this film has been few and far between, we’re happy to present a new high resolution still (seen above) featuring Statham himself. And even though said photo merely teases the scale of said sea beast, we’re guessing it’s going to take a hell of a lot more than the action star’s fancy moves to subdue it.

The Meg arrives in theaters on August 10.
