The Expendables 3 was once promised to be the last chapter in the franchise, but it seems that’s not the case anymore as we found out recently that The Expendables 4 is now a go. However, shortly after the big announcement came the shocking news that Sylvester Stallone was bowing out of the project. At the time, sources said it was due to disagreements with Nu Image/Millennium Chief Avi Lerner.

From what we understand, Lerner and Stallone have butted heads in the past, but have apparently been able to find common ground. Not for this pic, though, with lengthy arguments over elements of the planned Expendables 4 – these range from your usual disagreements over director and script to more esoteric things like which CGI company will take care of the effects. Unfortunately, after the actor departed, all went quiet on the project but now, a mysterious Instagram post from Stallone has fans thinking he might have had a change of heart.

Taking to the social media platform, the actor shared the below pic, along with the caption: “Time to try to get back into action movie shape! Even though it’s almost an impossible dream you just got to keep going forward. You’re only as old as you feel. The brain is a muscle that should never ever stop being worked out!”

So, what could he be getting in shape for? Well, we don’t know for sure just yet, but it’s most likely The Expendables 4. True, one of the photos we see of him here is from his time playing Rambo, but at 71 years of age, we don’t imagine he’ll be returning to that role ever again. Not to mention there’s been nothing to point to another film featuring the character happening. As such, it’s possible that he’s teasing a return to the world of The Expendables.

Chalk that up as speculation for now, but from what we know about the pic so far, the producers hope to give fans something different this time around, notably a potential “fish out of water” scenario where the gang is left in an “unnatural environment” that’s “jarring” and creates “extra suspense and tension.” Whether or not that turns out to be the case remains to be seen, as it’s still early days, but it does sound exciting and we’ll be keeping you right up to date on any further Expendables 4 updates as and when we get them.
