The Marvel Cinematic Universe has succeeded beyond everyone’s wildest dreams. The franchise delivers blockbuster after blockbuster and rakes in billions of dollars, so it’s hardly surprising that the studio is making plans beyond the cataclysmic Avengers: Infinity War, which will wrap up plotlines that have been building since Phase One.
Said plans apparently involve an astonishing 20Â upcoming films in the franchise, which by my estimate should take us all the way up to 2030. And that’s not including the unreleased MCU movies currently in various stages of production.
It’s safe to say that somewhere in these 20 films will be sequels to current Phase 3 pics like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but the scope of the next ten years makes us wonder what else they’ve got up their sleeves. Whatever it is that the studio has planned, we can be sure of one thing, and that’s that they’ll just keep pumping out hit after hit.
Yes, it seems that these days, anything to come from the House of Ideas is a smashing success and according to Chris Evans at least, that’s simply because Marvel doesn’t miss. Speaking at Ace Comic Con this week, the actor explained what it was like making both Infinity War and its currently untitled sequel, saying:
“That was the best part of these movies, is that you really kind of, it really was for the first time for me feeling like… the first few movies it’s almost like it’s happening to somebody else. You kind of feel like you’re watching it happen, but you’re not actually a part of it.
This was kind of the first movie where you actually felt like you had a seat at the table and you belonged and it was so nice to have all these other franchises that you’ve watched and admired come to a set where you’re like oh man, I belong here, and all these great people are part of a movie that we’re all doing together, and it was just wonderful because all of those franchises, well, let’s be honest. Marvel doesn’t miss. They haven’t missed yet. They’re batting a thousand.”
In regards to why the studio is so damn successful, Evans didn’t have an answer for that, but did say:
“I don’t know how they do that. They don’t miss though and so to see all these actors come together from all these other franchises that I’ve seen as fans be exchanging dialogue with me was overwhelming and really just so satisfying because really truly, there’s not one bad apple.”
You have to admit that Evans is mostly right – Marvel really doesn’t miss. True, they may not hit a home run with every single release, but even their lesser efforts do respectable box office business. I mean, the MCU is the highest grossing franchise of all-time, with roughly $13.5 billion under its belt. And you can expect that total to climb significantly higher by the year’s end.
In case you haven’t heard, there’s a little film called Avengers: Infinity War on the horizon, and that, along with Black Panther and Ant-Man and the Wasp will once again ensure that Marvel has a stellar year at the box office.
