Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War

Infinity War’s Tom Holland Had No Clue Who He Was Fighting On Set

Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo didn't always tell Tom Holland who he was fighting during the production.

Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan weren’t the only Marvel stars present at Arizona’s ACE Comic Con this past weekend – Spidey, himself, Tom Holland, also swung by to answer one or three questions relating to Avengers: Infinity War.

On the off-chance that you’ve been living under a rock, it’s the upcoming crossover movie primed to unite many of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (and the Guardians!) for a titanic war against Thanos. Indeed, that conflict will spill over into the so-far untitled Avengers 4, which is expected to wrap things up in 2019.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, while fielding all sorts of curious questions and Marvel-related queries in Phoenix, Arizona, Holland revealed that he wasn’t entirely sure who he was fighting in Avengers: Infinity War. Much like most other entries in the MCU, Infinity War features a cavalcade of CGI-enhanced villains – namely Thanos and his Black Order – but in the interest of fighting spoilers, Holland was largely kept in the dark, as Joe and Anthony Russo weren’t always at liberty to say.

Said he:

I remember for Avengers, the Russo Brothers are like ‘so you’re just standing here, and you’re fighting this guy and just do whatever’ and I’m like, ‘okay, who am I fighting?’ And they were like ‘well, we can’t tell you because it’s a secret.’ I’m like, ‘okay so what does he look like?’ And they’re like ‘well, we can’t tell you because that would give it away, so I’m like ‘how big is he?’ ‘Well, we can’t tell you because that would give it away.’ So, I’m just standing there punching the air for 15 minutes and when I took the job I didn’t think that’s what I’d be doing. I’ve gotten used to it now.

Angled to become the MCU’s new figurehead – thereby supplanting Tony Stark – Holland will be back on our screens this May thanks to Avengers: Infinity War, before Avengers 4 and the untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel deliver a one-two punch in 2019.
