To say that the last few months have been an eye-opener would be a massive understatement. In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, it seemed as though Pandora’s Box had been opened, with new allegations of sexual misconduct being brought to light on a regular basis. On the one hand, it’s good that the victims are finally able to take a stand and seek justice, but, on the other, it’s a shame that any of this had happened in the first place – and that a lid was kept on it for so long.
Unfortunately, the DC TV landscape was not immune to this, as word came down that one of the Arrowverse’s chief architects, Andrew Kreisberg, had allegedly sexually harassed a number of his colleagues. And after conducting an investigation of their own, Warner Bros. removed him as co-showrunner of both Supergirl and The Flash, not to mention as executive producer on their other sister series.
To put it mildly, one person that this situation likely didn’t sit well with had to be the Girl of Steel herself, Melissa Benoist. As a female lead who no doubt inspires many on a weekly basis, we can only imagine how difficult it was for her to wrap her head around this, but she did recently say, “That was a major disappointment,” and added the show “has recovered as a cast and a crew together.”
Additionally, she spoke of a certain weight that has been lifted:
“We have an atmosphere on set now that I’m extremely proud of. There are a lot of amazing men that work on our show and we have a lot of amazing women in powerful positions on our show as well.”
On that note, she didn’t shy away from praising executive producers Jessica Queller and Sarah Schechter, both of whom have stepped up their leadership, saying, “We’re all in the fight for equality and for a safer atmosphere in the working space.”
