Though the world is yet to lay eyes on a live-action rendition of Justice League Dark, a new interview conducted by Screen Rant reveals that Doug Liman could be the one to salvage the project from the brink of obscurity.

Liman, who is currently spearheading the development Edge of Tomorrow 2 (AKA Live Die Repeat and Repeat), sat down with Screen Rant to discuss Warner’s shelved title, one which centers on a ragtag group of anti-heroes comprised of Etrigan, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Deadman, and the chain-smoking Constantine.

It originally piqued the curiosity of Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy), who came attached to Justice League Dark circa 2013. In his short time with the live-action feature, del Toro developed a script that he was “super proud of,” before Joseph Kahn and later Doug Liman flirted with JLD. Turns out the latter is still very much interested in the proposition, as he revealed to Screen Rant:

I would be open to it. I have a very kind of contrarian approach to how I make things and I don’t want to do them the way other people have done them. You know, Impulse is an original take on superpower as you can imagine and still be satisfying. Because obviously there’s some things – you can be original and artsy and not… Part of the reason cliches exist is because they’re satisfying to the audience so my challenge as a filmmaker has always been to do something that’s really original and still totally satisfying on a big commercial level, which I feel we’ve done with Impulse and I’d be really interested in doing that within the DC world if the right piece of material comes along.

Whether Doug Liman circles back to Justice League Dark will largely depend on scheduling, as the director is currently committed to Edge of Tomorrow 2 alongside Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Should Doug Liman pass, and we’re inclined to believe he will, Warner Bros. still has big plans for Justice League Dark, as evidenced by the decision to include said property in a recent DC sizzle reel – a sizzle reel which placed Zatanna and Swamp Thing alongside known quantities in the vein of Wonder Woman 2 and Shazam! Stay tuned for more on that front.
