Joe Russo, one half of the creative team driving Avengers: Infinity War, has finally addressed speculation linking Steve Rogers – and, by effect, Captain America – with the Nomad mantle.
Flanked by his brother Anthony Russo, not mention screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus (The Winter Soldier, Civil War), Joe Russo recently sat down with Digital Spy to discuss all things Marvel, including Steve Rogers and his projected trajectory.
He’s a member of the MCU’s old guard – a Phase One Avenger so stubborn in his commitment to protecting people that he waged war against Tony Stark, who was still pedaling the contentious Superhuman Registration Act. Fast forward to 2018, and with the Captain America title ostensibly shelved, fans are beginning to wonder what Avengers: Infinity War has in store for the star-spangled patriot.
Well, it turns out Rogers still questions the chain of command:
Our approach to [Steve Rogers] was to deconstruct him, to take him in a different direction. Obviously, you can’t deal with a character called Captain America without dealing with the thematics behind that, so we wanted a relevancy to it and we wanted to put him in a position where he was questioning the chain of command.
Not unlike Hawkeye’s alleged transformation into Ronin, Nomad has been floated as a potential avenue for the Russo Brothers to explore. It’s certainly plausible, as it would explain Cap’s story post-Civil War. However, according to Joe Russo, the Captain America of Avengers: Infinity War isn’t exactly Nomad.
You’ll see in these Avengers films, he’s on a very specific journey as a character. Some people have suspected that he may be Nomad heading into Avengers 3 and I wouldn’t say that he is exactly Nomad, but he is the spirit of that character.
Because even if Cap is disillusioned with the Powers That Be, there’s an Infinity War on the horizon, and you can’t fight Thanos alone.
