With Black Panther and Infinity War occupying headlines left, right, and center, you’d be forgiven for overlooking Marvel’s third and final movie of 2018: Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Slated to arrive on July 6th – only eight short weeks after Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers sequel – the Peyton Reed-directed pic largely revolves around Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and her quest to find her long-lost mother, Janet. Industry veteran Michelle Pfeiffer has been brought on board to play the latter Wasp, which is almost worth the price of admission alone.
But when it comes to the film’s titular dynamic, lead star Paul Rudd, who’s about to reprise his role as street-level crook Scott Lang, believes the duo are “very much partners.”
We’re partners. We’re a team. In the comics, that was the same story. Ant-Man and Wasp are together. We just finished shooting, and so we’ll see what the final movie is, but we’re very much partners.
Romantic partners, perhaps? It’s no secret that the twosome had their moments in 2015’s Ant-Man, so it’ll be interesting to gauge how their relationship has evolved over the past three years – and that’s before we even factor Avengers 4 into the equation.
Peyton Reed, on the other hand, firmly believes that Ant-Man and the Wasp is the latter’s “coming out party,” as Hope van Dyne and her father, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), are finally singing from the same hymn sheet.
This is really her coming out party as a hero. Her power set is fantastic. She and Scott both shrink, but there the flying, and the fighting style of the Wasp is different from Ant-Man’s.
Scott Lang has met his equal, then, and Marvel fans will be in for a real treat when Ant-Man and the Wasp takes flight on July 6th.
