Aside from his involvement in a super creepy cult, I find it difficult to dislike Tom Cruise. Sure, he’s a bit odd, but he’s always nice to his fans on the red carpet and he comes across as an admirably dedicated and hardworking actor. That said, check out the poor bastard snapping his ankle in two jumping between buildings while filming Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Clearly, he took things a little too seriously when someone told him to ‘break a leg’ before he went to set that day.
Impressively, we get to see the accident from multiple angles, with talk show host Graham Norton taking us, Cruise and his other guests (Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill and Simon Pegg) through the injury. It seems that Cruise as Ethan Hunt was always supposed to splat up against the wall and scramble up onto the other building, but definitely wasn’t supposed to cripple himself in the process.
Most impressively, however, and cementing Cruise as kind of a badass, he goes on to complete the shot despite knowing that he’s broken a bone. That’s commitment right there. The injury was so bad that filming had to temporarily shut down while he recovered, which must have cost Paramount an arm and leg. I’m not sure who ended up footing the bill for the delay, but I’m sure their insurance guys had all the uh, ankles (angles) covered.
Despite this setback, Mission: Impossible – Fallout wrapped in good time and is currently scheduled to open on July 27th. While the franchise may be getting a little long in the tooth, each installment has been simply cracking, with each film breaking new ground and twisting audience expectations. Here’s hoping the finished product will cast Tom Cruise in a good light after the bandage-strewn disaster of The Mummy.
