Filming is currently underway on Doctor Who season 11 and, even more so than usual, the BBC are keeping a tight hold on any info on the new run. That’s because it will signal a fresh start for the show, as Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker and incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall take the reigns of the sci-fi behemoth. Now, however, we can finally say when season 11 will hit our screens.
The BBC Worldwide Showcase, which unveils the corporation’s biggest upcoming TV series, is occurring in Liverpool today and, of course, Doctor Who is the jewel in the crown of the conference. Some interesting updates are coming out of the event, too, and one just so happens to be when the show will return, which we can now tell you will be in October. An exact date has yet to be revealed, but at least this narrows it down to the month.
While a start date in October isn’t a complete shock, it is slightly later than some might have hoped. Doctor Who is no stranger to airing towards the end of the year, but in these cases, it’s typically kicked off in August or September. It’s worth remembering, though, that season 11 will be shorter than previous runs. Instead of the old 13×45 minute season-length, this year will provide us with a 10 episode season comprising 9×50 minute episodes and one 65 minute premiere.
In addition to all that, we’re also hearing that the BBC will be making some kind of special presentation featuring Doctor Who during the Worldwide Showcase event. What it may consist of is unknown, but speculation is pointing to it bringing us the first season 11 trailer, which would be hugely exciting.
Of course, it could be something else – perhaps some official stills? – but either way, Doctor Who fans may want to keep an eye out for any juicy announcements today or tomorrow as they now begin counting down the days until the show returns.
