The future of the MCU belongs to women, according to Thor: Ragnarok‘s Tessa Thompson.
Having wowed comic book fans with her fierce portrayal of Valkyrie, arguably the breakout star of Ragnarok, the actress spoke to Entertainment Tonight recently and hinted at a possible uptick in female-fronted storylines (and spinoffs, perhaps?) in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which may, in turn, trickle down to affect the likes of Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, who has already been earmarked for an MCU movie of her own.
Chatting to the outlet, Thompson declared that “the future of Marvel seems to be very female,” before going on to explain that in Phase Four, the women rule supreme.
“I think what we’re seeing, regardless of a Lady Liberator or an A-Force movie or a female ensemble Marvel movie, is that in phase four, women rule supreme. We’re seeing a Black Widow movie in the works, which I hear about and is so exciting, Captain Marvel with Brie Larson and DeWanda Wise. We’re seeing that women are at the forefront of these stories [and], of course, with Black Panther those incredible warrior women in that film.”
As Thompson makes clear, the studio’s eager to start diving into more of their female heroes. That’s very evident by both Captain Marvel and the Black Widow solo pic, while Ragnarok, as we mentioned above, saw the aforementioned actress have a fairly prominent role as Valkyrie. In fact, she was actually one of the best parts about the threequel, with many calling for the character to now get her own standalone outing.
Not only that, but if you recall, late last year, a photo of many of the MCU’s heroines went viral and reminded us how awesome it would be to see these characters join up to fight evil in their own movie. The actresses included were Scarlet Johansson, Brie Larson, Zoe Saldana, Evangeline Lilly, Pom Klementieff and Danai Gurira.
Add in other stalwarts like Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), and you’d have one heck of a line-up. Not to mention the fact that the X-Men could soon join the MCU as well, meaning that a lot more female heroes might be up for grabs, too.
Whatever ends up happening though, whether it be more female-led films or an actual all-female team-up movie, which is being considered, apparently, one thing that’s abundantly clear is that Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be all about the girls.
