The lives of the Baudelaire orphans are about to get even worse. At least, that’s according to the new trailer for the upcoming second season of Netflix’s dark comedy-drama A Series of Unfortunate Events, based on Lemony Snicket’s hit series of children’s books. Like Patrick Warburton’s dour narrator might say, I urge you not to look at the horrifying trailer, but if you must you can find it above.
As you can see, Neil Patrick Harris’ theatrical villain Count Olaf is back and employing even more ridiculous disguises and harebrained schemes in his ongoing quest to get his hands on the sizeable fortune of Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes) and baby Sunny. Unfortunately for the children, they’re still surrounded by ignorant adults who are supposed to be taking care of them, including K. Todd Freeman’s gullible banker Mr. Poe.
New faces introduced in season 2 include Lucy Punch, as Olaf’s new female partner-in-crime Esme Squalor, while Castle‘s Nathan Fillion is also joining the ensemble as the fetchingly mustachioed Jacques Snicket, the brother of the fictional storyteller. The three youngsters will also befriend some fellow orphans at their new school. These will be the children of Cobie Smulders and Will Arnett’s ill-fated adventurers, who we were led to believe were Mr. and Mrs. Baudelaire throughout season 1.
Just as the first season adapted the first four books in the series, from The Bad Beginning to The Miserable Mill, season 2 will tackle the next few in the sequence. However, it also has an additional two episodes to play with, meaning the 10 episode season will get through books number 5 (The Austere Academy) to 9 (The Carnivorous Carnival). This is ahead of the third and final run of the show, which will adapt the remaining installments of the 13-volume series.
I implore you not to watch A Series of Unfortunate Events, but if you really must, know that it arrives on Netflix on March 30th.
