Despite reports to the contrary, Nick Fury has a role to play in the Captain Marvel movie. And it’s a big one.
Via Entertainment Weekly, Marvel chief Kevin Feige has been busy fielding questions about the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its incredibly bright future, which will seemingly include a Black Panther sequel and, through time, members of the X-Men – providing that $52.4 billion Disney-Fox merger gets the green light, of course.
And so, when the conversation veered toward Carol Danvers, Feige confirmed that much of the long-anticipated standalone movie will take place in outer space – fitting, really, given the character’s cosmic roots – and include a sizeable role for one Nick Fury. As a matter of fact, it seems Captain Marvel was the first superhero that Samuel L. Jackson’s ringleader ever encountered back in the 1990s.
We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, ‘You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.’ Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across.
Feige continued:
That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within the timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel.
The “sassy, smartass” Carol Danvers will officially be drafted into the MCU on March 8th, 2019 thanks to Captain Marvel. And after that? A supporting role in the fourth Avengers movie, before Brie Larson’s heroine goes on to shape Phase 4.
