Dr. Leonard H. “Bones” McCoy is a fixture of the Star Trek universe.
He was initially brought to life by DeForest Kelley back in the late ’60s, before Karl Urban picked up the torch in time for Paramount’s rebooted series circa 2009.
And after almost 10 years and three big-screen appearances, the former Dredd star believes a Quentin Tarantino-directed Star Trek movie is exactly what the franchise needs at this moment in time. Indeed, it’s going on two years since Justin Lin’s Beyond beamed into theaters, and the illustrious sci-fi series has been on a temporary hiatus ever since – particularly now that J.J. Abrams is entrenched in Lucasfilm’s far-away galaxy ahead of Star Wars: Episode IX.
However, when it comes to Urban and that planned R-rated Trek movie from Tarantino, the former firmly believes that QT’s particular set of cinematic skills can help catapult Star Trek to new heights.
I know nothing more than you guys do! My personal belief is that he’s probably the exact kind of energy the franchise needs. It’s just important to remain open to whatever the story is, and whatever collaboration may evolve. Whether that’s going to mean swearing, more graphic violence or sex, I don’t know. It’ll be interesting to see.
Karl Urban now joins a long and star-studded list of Star Trek alumni who have placed their trust in Quentin Tarantino, given William Shatner, John Cho and the great Patrick Stewart (X-Men) have all voiced their support of Paramount and Tarantino’s bold new direction.
It’ll seemingly be R-rated, too, meaning QT’s Star Trek movie will uphold the creed of the Enterprise and go boldly where no one has gone before.
