Amid intense rumors about Cap’s future in the MCU – or lack thereof – Steve Rogers himself, Chris Evans, has all but confirmed plans to exit Marvel’s juggernaut franchise once the reshoots on Avengers 4 are complete.

Word comes by way of The New York Times, where Evans spoke at length about his MCU tenure and the forthcoming Avengers: Infinity War, which may well signal the moment when his character ditches the Captain America title in favor of Nomad, a lone wolf famous for operating on the fringes of the law.

And so, when asked straight-up about the possibility of another appearance as Marvel’s patriot, the actor confirmed that he currently has no plans to extend his MCU contract beyond 2019, adding:

You want to get off the train before they push you off.

Short and sweet, then. But the fact that Chris Evans’ contract is coming to an end means this status report is less of a gut-punch and more of an inevitability. And a sad one at that.

Nevertheless, it does leave the door open for Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) to come in and assume the Captain America mantle, thereby dovetailing with his beloved character arc from Marvel Comics.

Whatever the case, it’s seemingly the best thing since sliced bread and so secretive – so god damn mysterious – that no one has come close to guessing the storyline…yet. Yes, Avengers 4 is a total mystery at this point, but if there’s one thing we can tell you with absolute certainty, it’ll herald a profound sea change for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with a farewell party for the star-spangled patriot.
