It’s looking increasingly likely that Monica Rambeau has been earmarked for 2019’s standalone Captain Marvel movie.

Seven days ago, it was reported that DeWanda Wise was forced to pull out of the Brie Larson-led spinoff due to a scheduling conflict with her Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, which has now been picked up for a second season.

Disappointing though that may be, Marvel Studios quickly placed its crosshairs on British actress Lashana Lynch to replace the outgoing Wise, and we’re now learning that she may be up for the role of Monica Rambeau, a character associated with Spectrum, The Avengers and even Captain Marvel in the original comics.

Here’s that alleged casting update, courtesy of That Hashtag Show:

We are told that Wise was set to play the mother of a young child who would be a ‘contemporary’ of Carol Danvers. As for what role it might be, all we can offer is a bit of speculation: the actress who originally passed on the role is a dead ringer for one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe and a one-time holder of the Captain Marvel legacy title herself: Monica Rambeau.

Granted, That Hashtag Show admits that Monica Rambeau isn’t a shoo-in for Captain Marvel, necessarily; merely that the recent casting switch between DeWanda Wise and Lashana Lynch, not to mention the latter’s likeness to the actual character, present food for thought.

What we do know, however, is that Captain Marvel primarily unfolds in the 1990s (and outer space!) and will feature such big-name stars as Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn and Gemma Chan.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck of Mississippi Grind, has been slated for March 6th, 2019, which is smack bang in the middle of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, two films that seemingly have less in common than we’ve been led to believe.
