As things stand, Avengers 4 is currently a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, nestled in some far-flung corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With only a tentative title to call its own – not to mention that all-important May 2019 release date – Joe and Anthony Russo’s conclusive blockbuster has been shrouded in a thick veil of secrecy ever since Marvel scrapped plans to release its back-to-back superhero extravaganza as Infinity Wars 1 and 2.
That’s because Avengers 3 and its unnamed sequel are shaping up to be two very, very different movies, which really begs the question: Just what on Earth do the Russo Brothers have in store? Well, if you’re itching for answers – or, at the very least, allusions – Joe Russo recently pointed fans in the direction of Captain America: Civil War.
You should go back and look at clues in [Captain America:] Civil War to what’s in that movie.
Time travel and even alternate timelines have all been floated as possible plot points, though based on Stephen McFeely, one of the co-writers behind Infinity War and its 2019 follow-up, viewers haven’t come anywhere close to guessing the story of Avengers 4.
Said he:
Nobody knows, and that’s what makes me particularly excited. I look all the time on the internet: people have no idea! [Avengers] 4 resolves the intrigue of Infinity War; [the movies are] clearly linked, but they almost seem to belong to two different genres. We did not want to cut a film in half and say, ‘Pay now and come back in a year for the rest!’ These are two very different stories, on a tonal and structural level.
And, frankly, we’re relieved. Even if Captain America: Civil War contains some minor story clues, Marvel Studios has managed to keep Avengers 4 on lockdown as it braces for the oncoming arrival of Avengers: Infinity War, which is a miracle in and of itself. Destiny arrives on April 27th.
