Zack Snyder Reveals The Meaning Behind Batman V Superman’s Opening Scene

With the film's second anniversary having arrived this week, now seems like a good time to revisit Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Though its negative reception pretty much derailed the DC Extended Universe, it's fair to say that it's developed a cult following ever since, with fans championing Snyder's magnum opus as a misunderstood masterpiece.

Whether you agree with that or not is up to your personal tastes, but it’s clear that the director put a lot more thought into his movie than many give him credit for. Recently, Snyder opened up about his thinking behind the opening scene of BvS. If you’ll recall, it ended with a surreal moment as the young Bruce Wayne was lifted towards the light by a flock of bats. Ben Affleck’s voice played over it all, saying: “In the dream, they took me to the light. A beautiful lie.”

Taking to Vero recently, the director explained the meaning of the scene a little bit, revealing that there are some complicated themes to do with justice and vigilantism and light and darkness tied into this particular moment:

In recent months, Snyder has hopped on Vero quite often to provide some extra insight about overlooked elements of his DCEU movies. So far, he’s pointed out callbacks to the comic books that a lot of fans missed and, most interestingly, what was supposed to be a hint to Justice League 2

As you probably know, though, there unfortunately won’t be a Justice League 2 anymore – at least, not as the director envisioned it. Following Warner Bros. execs turning their noses up at his initial cut of the first film, Snyder was removed from production and extensive reshoots were undertaken by The Avengers‘ Joss Whedon. Not that that worked out any better, mind you, as JL went on to become the lowest-grossing DCEU entry of the lot.

Anyways, circling back to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s nice to see that the film is still being discussed even so long after its release and if Snyder decides to provide any further insight, we’ll be sure to let you know.
