Doom, the unholy, time-honored franchise that has its roots in the video game industry, is poised for a second coming at Universal, if a new Tweet from Nina Bergman is to be believed.

As reported by the folks over at Dread Central, Bergman, best known for her performances across Assassin X and the Sharknado series, posted a series of Tweets earlier this week revealing that, yes, there’s a new Doom movie simmering in development over at Universal, though it’s unclear as yet whether this is a reboot, a reimagining, or some form of spiritual successor to the 2005 flop starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Chances are Universal is gunning for a full-fledged reboot, one that’ll no doubt be buoyed by the runaway success of Bethesda’s own video game reboot, which stripped away all of the superfluous story and game mechanics that defined recent installments – not to mention those scrapped plans for a Call of Duty-esque sequel – back in 2016 to focus on what makes Doom so special: fast and furious gunplay that’s built around Doomguy, a one-man wrecking ball capable of wiping out an entire hierarchy of bloodthirsty demons.

When it comes to Universal’s live-action reset, we understand Nina Bergman has agreed to star in the feature film, which is presumably scouting for locations in and around Bulgaria, according to the actress’ recent tweet:

Wow, I’m doing the next ‘Doom’ movie w/Universal Pictures! I just signed all the paperwork. I get to go back to Bulgaria again and work with some of my favorite people. This movie w/a super cool Director AND my new record coming out, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

In a follow-up post, Bergman stressed that Universal’s Doom redo will feature a script that is “much better” than the one that underpinned Andrzej Bartkowiak’s video game movie of 2005. And that’s it, really. No word of a possible release window or any further casting details, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on things as this film reboot begins to claw its way up from the fiery depths of hell.
