In a recent interview with Collider, James Cameron touched a bit on how the upcoming reboot of The Terminator will differ from the original.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Tim Miller (Deadpool), James Cameron (Avatar) and Paramount Pictures, Skynet is currently being reprogrammed ahead of the forthcoming Terminator reboot.

Details on the project are still scarce, but Cameron and Miller have reportedly settled on a female protagonist by the name of Dani Ramos, who we know will be played by Mackenzie Davis. She’ll be starring opposite Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800. And while we still don’t know much about the plot, we have been told that it’ll ignore all films post-Terminator 2: Judgment Day – much like the upcoming Halloween sequel is doing.

With casting now underway (Gabriel Luna was added in the titular role just the other day), it shouldn’t be too much longer before we start learning more about the project, but in the meantime, James Cameron has touched a bit on how the reboot will differ from the original, telling Collider the following:

“We’re developing a new Terminator film. And The Terminator films are all about artificial intelligence. But I would say we’re looking at it differently than when I wrote the first story in 1982. That was just your classic ‘technology bad, smart computers bad’ kind of thing. Nowadays though — it’s got to be a much more nuanced perspective. So its ‘Smart computers bad… BUT…’ That’s the new motif.”

Though Cameron keeps things a bit cryptic here, we’re certainly intrigued to find out more. If one thing’s for sure, it’s that rebooting one of the most beloved science fiction films of the modern era is a huge undertaking, though after Deadpool, Tim Miller seemingly has the directorial stones to pull it off. Besides, he’s got the notoriously perfection-seeking Cameron breathing over his shoulder, and you wouldn’t want to let him down. Plus, let’s face it, it’s about damn time we got a win from this particular franchise, right?

The Terminator officially boots online November 22nd, 2019, where it’ll likely face stiff competition from Wonder Woman 2 and Disney’s Frozen sequel. As always, watch this space for more.
