Solo: A Star Wars Story May Spawn A Prequel Trilogy Of Its Own

If Alden Ehrenreich is to be believed, Solo: A Star Wars Story will herald the beginning of a new prequel trilogy under Lucasfilm.

To say that Disney is currently presiding over a multitude of Star Wars projects would be to deal in wild understatement.

Six years have passed since the Mouse House’s historic acquisition of Lucasfilm, and in that time, the industry giant has launched three big-name blockbusters in The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi.

The fourth, aptly titled Solo: A Star Wars Story, is just around the corner, and we now have reason to believe that it’ll spawn a prequel trilogy of its own – one that is presumably unrelated to Rian Johnson’s new-fangled Star Wars trilogy, along with the one in development from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Like we alluded to before, that galaxy far, far away is about to become a crowded one.

And to make matters more interesting, it seems Alden Ehrenreich has let slip that Solo: A Star Wars Story is, in fact, the first of a trilogy, given the actor told Esquire that his forthcoming appearance as the young nerf-herder is the first of three.

Here’s an extract from Esquire’s deep dive:

I ask Ehrenreich how many he’s signed up for. “Three,” he says, then flinches, understanding he may have just created a disturbance in the Force. “I don’t know if that’s officially, uh, public. But—yeah.”

That sound you hear is the bigwigs at Lucasfilm spurting out their coffee in disbelief. Granted, there have been rumblings of a possible Lando-centric spinoff being announced soon after Solo: A Star Wars Story, as it would be foolish to limit Donald Glover’s rendition of the ice-cool smuggler to just one movie.

And that’s before we even consider the possibility of a Boba Fett spinoff. Remember, just like Rogue One before it, Solo: A Star Wars Story is an Anthology film, so it seems more likely that Alden Ehrenreich’s three appearances will be spread out across a loosely connected series of movies. Lando and Boba Fett, perhaps? We’ll find out more on May 25th.
