Captain Marvel’s “Inspiring” Origin Story Will Introduce The MCU’s Strongest Superhero

At last night's Avengers: Infinity War premiere, Marvel boss Kevin Feige offered new intel on the Captain Marvel solo movie and Nick Fury's role in it.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is not ready for Carol Danvers.

Originally tipped for an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War – word is the Russo Brothers filmed scenes involving Brie Larson’s heroine, only to shelve them at the 11th hour – Miss. Danvers is now expected to make her MCU debut next March, when the long-anticipated Captain Marvel solo movie takes flight.

Touting a who’s who of Hollywood talent and a deeply nostalgic 1990s setting, Marvel’s first female-led blockbuster has all the makings of a special, ground-breaking expansion of the MCU, and while attending last night’s premiere of Infinity War, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Variety that Captain Marvel is far and away the strongest superhero they’ve ever introduced.

You’re going to get the most powerful superhero we’ve ever introduced and what I think is one of the most unique and inspiring origin stories. We are a little less than halfway through filming now. We had an early call time this morning so they could finish and get here for the premiere tonight and then they’ll be back early tomorrow. It’s going extremely well, and it’s a great cast on that film.

There’s also the small matter of Nick Fury and Agent Coulson, two fan-favorites who are set to feature pretty prominently in the standalone movie from co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The former character is of particular importance to Feige, given he helped formed The Avengers six years ago and ostensibly redraw the parameters that make up the comic book movie genre.

He continued:

Being able to tap into Carol Danvers story for the very first time — to bring that to the screen and tap into an era of the MCU we’ve never been in the ‘90s. To see a version of Nick Fury whose reached a point in his career where he thought the wars over and the best days are behind him.

Certain things he encounters in this movie sets him up for the path where we are 19 films later. It’s really special, and I can’t wait for us to finish it, cut it together, put it in theaters so people can see it, and then people can go see the next Avengers film next year.

Captain Marvel will help bridge the gap between Infinity War and Avengers 4 when it touches down in theaters on March 8th, 2019.
