After the last three attempts to revive the Terminator franchise failed to stick the landing – namely, 2003’s Rise of the Machines, 2009’s Salvation and 2015’s Genisys – creator James Cameron is hoping it’ll be fourth time’s a charm with his upcoming sixth installment in the sci-fi blockbuster series.
Currently titled Terminator, the movie – coming to us from Deadpool‘s Tim Miller – looks to be going back to basics. Or at least, it sure seems that way judging by its first logo, which was released at CinemaCon.
Though touted as something of a reboot of the franchise, the 2019 Terminator film will apparently continue with the same logo we saw with Genisys, an update of the one used for the 1984 original. As you can see below, it was unveiled alongside an image of Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor, in her iconic action heroine persona from 1991’s Terminator: Judgment Day, which serves as a reminder that the first leading lady of the series will return in the new film.
From what we understand, Terminator will focus on a new female protagonist in the shape of Dani Ramos, as played by Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049). The titular killer robot from the future, meanwhile, will be brought to life by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Gabriel Luna.
Furthermore, the reboot will ignore the increasingly convoluted events of the past three entries in the series and simply continue on from Terminator: Judgment Day. This is how Hamilton’s set to return, as Sarah Connor was said to have died in Rise of the Machines.
Plot details are scarce at the moment, and understandably so, but producer James Cameron has teased that the film will explore a more “nuanced” take on the theme of artificial intelligence that’s always been the bedrock of the franchise. He suggested that it might look at the positive side of A.I. rather than simply portraying Skynet as the ultimate evil. “So its ‘Smart computers bad… BUT…’” he explained. “That’s the new motif.”
The new Terminator is set to be teleported into cinemas on November 22nd, 2019. Let’s just hope it finally marks a comeback for the once great franchise.
