Mission: Impossible Director Says He’s Discussed Man Of Steel 2 With Henry Cavill

Last week, we reported that Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie was interested in taking the reins of the next solo Superman movie - currently known as Man of Steel 2. Now, we're hearing that there might be a little more meat on that rumor, as McQuarrie has confirmed in an interview with ComicBook.com that he discussed the character and potential story ideas with Henry Cavill whilst filming the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible series.

Last week, we reported that Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie was interested in taking the reins of the next solo Superman movie – currently known as Man of Steel 2Now, we’re hearing that there might be a little more meat on that rumor, as McQuarrie has confirmed in an interview with ComicBook.com that he discussed the character and potential story ideas with Henry Cavill whilst filming the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible series.

Chatting with the outlet at CinemaCon, here’s what he shared.

“Henry Cavill knows what it would be like. We had a a lot of time hanging out on set, and Henry’s a huge fan of Superman. I can’t help but talk story to people, so he told me his take on Superman and I thought it was really great, and I gave him my two cents. The tweet you’re referring to is somebody asked ‘Would you do it?’ and I said ‘Hey, they know where to find me.’ Nobody’s asked, but you know…”

While there’s been no official word on Man of Steel 2 just yet, it seems likely that it’s going to happen at some point. After all, Henry Cavill is reportedly eager to renew his contract with Warner Bros. after it expires with his appearance in Shazam! and with Zack Snyder definitely not being allowed near a cape anytime soon (unfairly, in my opinion), they’re going to be looking for directors with an epic vision, strong action chops and a dab hand with VFX.

And who better than McQuarrie? His last Mission: Impossible movie was a cut above most other blockbusters and he has a rigorous style that’d tesselate nicely with the original Man of Steel.

Plus, let’s face it, after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League both being insanely bloated, clumsy and just kind of boring, it’d be nice to see a more streamlined film that tells a straightforward Superman story without getting weighed down with other heroes.

My bet is that the future of Man of Steel 2 lies with James Wan’s AquamanIf that’s a hit, it should revive the DCEU, hopefully putting the past couple of years behind them, with a Superman sequel probably subtly rebooting the character. If Aquaman sinks without a trace, though, then I suspect they’ll call the whole thing off.
