Martin Scorsese To Remake The Gambler

It’s going to be interesting to see what Martin Scorsese will do with his first family film, Hugo, which is set to debut this Thanksgiving. It’s also the first time that the legendary director has worked with 3D. While we patiently wait to see how that turns out, news has broken that the Oscar winner is looking to team up once again with the crew of the Best Picture winner, The Departed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese will work again writer William Monahan on The Gambler, based on the James Caan film of the same name. Irwin Winkler, producer of the original, will produce the new version and Leonardo DiCaprio is wanted for the lead role, but nothing has been set in stone as of yet.

Originally based on a short story by Fydor Dostoyevsky, The Gambler tells about a beloved New York English professor who has a serious gambling addiction and is continuously increasing his debt. Caan received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the original version.

If hired, this would mark the fifth time DiCaprio and Scorsese have worked together. Their other films include Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed and Shutter Island.

The Gambler would make for another excellent project for the two to tackle and I’m really hoping it comes together.
