Joe and Anthony Russo exploded onto the MCU scene with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which has gone down as one of the franchise’s finest entries. Since then, they’ve become Marvel Studios’ most reliable directors, having helmed their most lucrative movies in the shape of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, with Avengers 4 out next year.
So, seeing as they’ve well and truly conquered the Marvel universe, would they be tempted to swap sides next time and try their hand at the DC universe instead? The brothers attended a special Q&A sponsored by the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday when they were asked this very question by a fan, and as it turns out, they’re not at all interested in switching teams.
Anthony Russo shrugged off the idea, saying that the pair were always much bigger Marvel fans as children. Joe then backed up his brother by talking about the closet full of old Marvel comics he has at home.
As for why they were much more drawn to the House of Ideas, Joe explained that he’s found DC’s pantheon of heroes to be somewhat “unrelatable” because many of them are too powerful in comparison to Marvel’s crop of characters. He went to say that as, kids growing up in Cleveland, which was in bankruptcy at the time, the Russos felt more connected to the underdog heroes of the Marvel universe.
That said, the director added that he found Batman to be one of DC’s best heroes, as Bruce Wayne’s “humanity and fallibility” made him much more “fascinating” in comparison to the rest of the Justice League.
The Russos’ comments here are very much the sort of thing you get from most Marvel fans about why they don’t like DC much. And, considering the success they’ve found at the House of Ideas with the likes of Avengers: Infinity War, who can blame the directors for feeling at home there?
