In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor, who’ll be playing Cable in the David Leitch-directed sequel, admitted that it was his deep-seated affection for Ryan Reynolds and more specifically, his romantic comedy The Proposal, that prompted the Academy Award nominee to undertake the role of the time travelling mutant in Deadpool 2.

“I was a secret fan of The Proposal, having watched it several times by myself. I told Ryan. I was like, ‘I don’t know why this is, and I don’t know what this means psychologically, behaviorally, emotionally, but I have kind of a crush on you.’”

Co-starring Sandra Bullock, The Proposal sees the Oscar winner portray Margaret Tate, editor in chief of a publishing house whose Visa is about to expire, resulting in her deportation. She then convinces her assistant, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), to temporarily act as her fiancé.

Reynolds, who’s aware of his villainous co-star’s bizarre love for the film, which currently holds a respectable 44% on Rotten Tomatoes – a rarity for your run-of-the-mill romcom – spoke about Brolin’s absurd infatuation with the pic, deeming it an elaborate facade.

“He’s mentioned it many times, which is weird to me because he’s so tough. I would just never imagine that. Like, he pretends he’s, like, all sort of New Age-y sometimes and all this stuff, but deep down inside I just think his heart is made of some, like, jagged chunk of Yosemite granite. I don’t buy that underneath all this textured skin is a sweet little angel that loves romantic comedies. I don’t buy it. Not for a second.”

You can see the Merc with a Mouth take on Brolin, whose voice you might recognize from his villainous portrayal in another little-known superhero film released earlier this year, Avengers: Infinity War, next week, when Deadpool 2 opens stateside on May 18th.
