Avengers: Infinity War Directors On The Possibility Of Helming A Star Wars Movie

From Arrested Development to Avengers: Infinity War and everything in between, Joe and Anthony have truly developed a knack for ensemble casts.

After all, this is the creative duo behind The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, but even they pale in comparison to the sheer scale and scope of Infinity War, which chronicles the Mad Titan’s journey through the cosmos as he goes about rounding up all six Infinity Stones – much to the horror of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Peppered among that story are elements of heist drama and the space operas of old – you can thank the Guardians of the Galaxy for that – so the question must be asked: will the Russo Brothers ever consider the possibility of helming a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm?

The double act naturally have their hands full with the release of next year’s Avengers 4, but as Joe Russo told ComicBook.com, plotting course for that galaxy far, far away isn’t exactly out of the question.

Here’s what the Infinity War co-director had to say when pressed about the potential gig:

You know, when we’re done telling stories in Marvel, then is there the opportunity to maybe go tell some other stories? We’ve not hidden the fact that Star Wars was a seminal experience like it was for everyone else. And that when The Empire Strikes Back came out, I sat in a theater from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and I watched it back-to-back-to-back. So I think we appreciate that universe as much as anyone. The question would be, ‘Can we find a story to tell in it? And what is it?

And that’s just it. Over the past 12 months, the Powers That Be over at Disney and Lucasfilm have effectively future-proofed the Star Wars franchise by ordering new trilogies from both Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones double act David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, while J.J. Abrams has been tasked with closing out the current Sequel Trilogy with the release of Episode IX late next year.

So at least on paper, there’s very little wiggle room for the Russo Brothers to come in and make their mark. Besides, with the impending Disney-Fox merger, perhaps it’s more fitting that the Infinity War directors remain in the realm of comic book movies?
