Those of us who took in Avengers: Infinity War as it should be, on the biggest screen possible AKA IMAX, know the importance of picture quality and aspect ratios.
Thankfully, in a new petition on Change.org, self-proclaimed “videophiles” are pushing for Marvel Studios/The Walt Disney Company to include the full aspect ratio of IMAX sequences in the third Avengers installment upon its home video release. The petition asks for a “full IMAX” option to be implemented on more formats since as it stands, home releases of Marvel Studios movies are being cropped to 2.39:1 on all formats except for Blu-ray 3D, which is the only variant to include the 1.90:1 aspect ratio for IMAX sequences.
Additionally, apparently “Disney no longer distributes 3D Blu-rays in the United States,” meaning if you wanted “to get the films at home with IMAX sequences in full frame,” you’d have to import from overseas. Why should you care? Well, according to Nathan Lanier, who started the petition, “when scenes are presented in their original aspect ratio…you get a more authentic feeling when watching films at home.”
Lanier’s appeal also tracks Marvel Studios’ history with cropping their pictures upon home release, including, but not limited to: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Doctor Strange (2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Black Panther (2018).
Seeing as Avengers: Infinity War was shot entirely with IMAX cameras, I suppose it would only make sense to include the proper aspect ratio here. But will you be signing the petition to “restore IMAX Sequences to the Home Releases of Marvel Studios Films?” Do let us know by commenting below.
