After dominating the global box office for three weeks straight, Avengers: Infinity War has now claimed the crown and become the highest grossing superhero film of all-time. Taking in another $349 million this weekend, and bringing its worldwide haul to $1.607 billion, it’s officially passed The Avengers to grab the title.

Not only that, but it’s also now the fifth-highest grossing movie ever, jumping over heavy hitters like Star Wars: The Last JediBlack PantherAge of UltronFurious 7 and the aforementioned Avengers. Of course, this in large part due to Infinity War hitting China this past weekend, where it had a massive $200 million opening.

It gets better, too, as Joe and Anthony Russo’s event movie to end all event movies is now the second-fastest to $500 million domestically, and the fastest to ever reach $1 billion globally. The records go on and on, of course, but it’s clear that this is going to be the year’s biggest film without a doubt and it’ll be fascinating to watch just how high it climbs. Especially with huge releases like Solo and Deadpool 2 on the way.

At this point, box office analysts now expect Avengers: Infinity War to tap out at around $1.8 billion – just shy of that elusive $2 billion milestone that has so far remained exclusive to holiday films, such as AvatarTitanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

We’re thinking it may still be able to hit the aforementioned mark, but even if it doesn’t, take nothing away from Marvel’s achievement, as the back-to-back success of Black Panther ($1.3 billion) and Infinity War has pushed the MCU to dizzying new heights, and we can’t wait to see where the franchise goes from here.
