Avengers: Infinity War VFX Video Breaks Down Titan Battle Scene

Due to the cosmic nature of the plot and its many action-heavy sequences, Avengers: Infinity War featured a heck of a lot of CGI. And though there were odd moments which felt a little off - any time Mark Ruffalo's head popped out of the Hulkbuster armor, for one - for the most part, the VFX work was suitably spectacular and certainly befitting of one of the most expensive movies ever made.

If you’re interested in a closer look at how these CG sequences were formed though, check out the short video below which showcases the developing VFX for the thrilling battle scene on Titan, Thanos’ devastated homeworld, in which Iron Man and his team tussle with the Mad Titan as he attempts to steal the Time Stone from Doctor Strange. The fascinating breakdown compares stripped-back early renderings of the CG animation along with the finished frames, which are often scarily realistic.

If nothing else, this video acts as a reminder of the incredible amount of work that goes into making the VFX as polished as can be, as it shows us the many layers of animation that are needed to ensure the scene comes alive. Though viewers often complain about too much CGI, the approach worked a treat in Infinity War, as it helped make the movie feel like a comic book translated to the big screen.

On a related note, Matt Aiken, VFX supervisor on Infinity War for Weta, previously spoke about why Thanos’ look in the film changed so drastically from his earlier appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He revealed that they endeavored to make the villain much more “detailed” and “natural” here since he was essentially “the lead character” – which definitely makes sense.

You can relive the battle on Titan, along with all the other film’s great moments, whenever you so choose, as Avengers: Infinity War is currently playing in theaters worldwide and crushing it at the box office.
