Zombieland Writers Aim To Have A Sequel Featuring Original Cast In Theaters Next Year

In the past fifteen years or so, the undead have dominated pretty much every facet of pop culture, be it in movies, TV, video games, or comic books. That said, I must confess to being among the ilk who've grown tired of flesh-eaters, barring some sort of refreshing take on the sub-genre.

In the past fifteen years or so, the undead have dominated pretty much every facet of pop culture, be it in movies, TV, video games, or comic books. That said, I must confess to being among the ilk who’ve grown tired of flesh-eaters, barring some sort of refreshing take on the sub-genre.

As you may have guessed, I really dug Zombieland, what with its fusion of horror and comedy that boasted some great characters to boot. To me, it was about the closest thing we’ve gotten on this side of the Pacific to a live action adaptation of Dead Rising.

So, if you were expecting a sequel to follow in the handful of years after the first film’s 2009 release, odds are that you’ve also been feeling a sense of disappointment. I mean, there have been glimmers of hope in fairly recent memory, as a script was said to be in place, but we’re all waiting for something more concrete.

Lifting our collective mood is that of co-screenwriter Paul Wernick, who had this status update for Vulture:

“We’re going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland. Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don’t know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2. The hope is that we’re shooting that thing early 2019 for an October of ’19 release… With the original cast, by the way.”

Well, it’s nice to see that somebody on this planet likes honoring anniversaries pertaining to zombies, something Capcom sure as hell isn’t doing by being on track to missing Resident Evil 2‘s 20th birthday on the gaming side of things. Still, it’s comforting to hear that the intention is to bring back the likes of Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin.

Of course, there’s other stuff Wernick can’t talk about, but he seemingly isn’t opposed to teasing us by saying the following:

“We are sitting on information that we can’t entirely share at this moment, but we can just say we think fans of Zombieland who have been hoping for a Zombieland 2, that we will grant their wish very, very soon.”

Should any more info regarding Zombieland 2 drop in the near future, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
