After 10 years and 19 movies – Avengers: Infinity War included – the MCU is practically synonymous with last-minute zingers designed to tee up the next chapter in Marvel’s blockbuster franchise. Or, in the case of Guardians of the Galaxy, revealing a happy little sapling so that moviegoers leave the theater with a smile on their face.
But the gravitas of Infinity War deserved something a little more understated, and sure enough, the post-credits scene saw Nick Fury and Maria Hill feeling the effects of Thanos’ snap, which destroyed half of all life in the universe. That includes the two former S.H.I.E.L.D agents as well. But before he turns into dust, Fury’s able to send a message for help, one that goes out to none other than Captain Marvel.
It’s a great tease for what’s to come, with Carol Danvers’ solo outing set to arrive next March. But according to Kevin Smith, there’s something that the studio could’ve done to make it even better: include a tease for the Fantastic Four.
Speaking during a live appearance in Prince George, British Columbia, the filmmaker revealed his thoughts on the post-credits scene, while also saying that it would’ve been even more exciting had Fury paged Reed Richards and co. rather than Captain Marvel.
“I said to Walter [Flanagan of Comic Book Men], ‘What did you think of the ending?’ He goes, ‘I really liked it, but for one moment, I thought when they were going in on the beeper, that it was gonna be the number four.’”
“And right there I started crying because I was like, ‘We missed a better movie!’ Could you imagine if they were just like ‘four,’ and we’re like, ‘Oh f—k, they’re f—king in the universe! Here comes the Baxter Building, bitch.’”
Continuing on, Smith said that he still thought the Carol Danvers tease was great, explaining that it was one of Marvel’s best yet:
“But what they gave us was amazing and I loved the Captain Marvel f—king teaser at the end. I thought it was one of their best teasers.”
We certainly agree with the filmmaker here, as the post-credits scene for Avengers: Infinity War was truly one of the MCU’s most exciting to date. Would it have been cooler if they teased the Four instead? Yeah, probably, but given that the Fox/Disney merger hasn’t gone through yet, there’s no legal way they could’ve done that. Considering the circumstances, I think they did the best that they could and ended the tremendously epic event movie on one heck of a cliffhanger.
