After so much hype and even those reports suggesting that Deadpool 2 would be a failure due to its purported poor test screenings, the pic finally debuted this past weekend and it seems like we had nothing to worry about, as it’s earned almost unanimous critical acclaim and also scored a massive opening. Granted, it failed to beat the original, but $125 million stateside for an R-rated movie is certainly nothing to scoff at.
Taking all the above into consideration, it’s safe to say that Deadpool 2 dodged the dreaded sequel curse, then. And while it’s still too early to know if it’ll end up being considered in the same league as other part twos like Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Dark Knight (which became the highlights of their respective franchises), it certainly delivered everything that fans were hoping for and expected and now, it sounds like we’ll be getting a little bit more.
No, we’re not referring to X-Force. Though make no mistake about it, Fox is definitely hot on that project at the moment – and understandably so. Instead, we’re talking about more of Deadpool 2, as director David Leitch has confirmed that they’re currently putting together an extended cut for us.
That’s according to CinemaBlend at least, who spoke to the filmmaker and are reporting that he told them the following:
“There’s an extended cut. And I think that they may want to spin that out as a special thing, but right now I’m sort of… we’re taking our time, and it’s going back to the ‘director cut,’ and then sort of collaborating with Ryan [Reynolds], Rhett [Reese], and Paul [Wernick], and making sure we’re all getting all the jokes we want – to have it be fun and our sort of fun collaboration.”
Continuing on, Leitch also teased a bit of what we might get in the longer version of the film, saying that:
“The suicide scene is in there, and there’s a scene in the mansion in the kitchen over breakfast. There’s some extra Domino stuff. There’s a lot of fun little bits, and then a lot of alts! We’re looking for every place we can put an alt.”
Unfortunately, the director didn’t specify where exactly we can expect to see the extended cut, but we presume it’ll make its way onto Blu-ray. It sounds like they’ve got a lot to add back in, too, which is great to hear. After all, Deadpool 2 was a hugely enjoyable movie and even despite its current runtime – 119 minutes – it never once felt too long or like it was dragging on. As such, we’re more than happy to sit down and watch a lengthier version once it’s ready for us.
