Despite having been in theaters for roughly a month now, there are still facets of Avengers: Infinity War that have yet to be addressed. Thankfully, the film’s directing duo, Anthony and Joe Russo, opened up about several of the fourth all-time highest-grossing movie’s unanswered questions earlier today.
The brothers held a Q&A session with Huffington Post where the liberal American news outlet’s extensive query list touched on the likes of Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) heartbreaking monologue and Star Lord’s (Chris Pratt) terrible mistake. However, we’re here to discuss Captain America’s phone number.
For a brief moment, Avengers: Infinity War prominently shows the star-spangled man with a plan’s digits (678-136-7092 – for those who didn’t get them) on screen. Thinking it was an Easter egg, droves of fans proceeded to punch in the number on their phones after seeing the film, only to discover that it didn’t work.
So, “what was the secret behind Captain America’s phone number?” asked Bill Bradley of HuffPo. Well, according to Joe Russo, the initial plan was indeed to create something for fans to find.
“We actually had intended to create a fake voicemail from Steve Rogers. For the people that left the theatre and called that number, they would get a voicemail from Steve Rogers.”
Sadly, however, the movie’s affiliated legal department got in the way, as Anthony Russo added:
“And that number was the actual number that we were going to use. We were sort of given that number. We had it all ready to go, but legal took that away from us.”
