Deadpool 2 Writers Explain How The Post-Credits Scene Came Together

We’re willing to say that Deadpool 2‘s post-credits sequence is one of the best we’ve ever seen at the end of a Marvel movie.

The collection of scenes filtered throughout not only turn the film’s plot on its head, but also go for broke with the Merc with a Mouth’s self-styled, fourth wall breaking humor. In short, Wade Wilson’s fiancee Vanessa is resurrected (not to mention Peter, too), X-Men Origins: Wolverine is revisited and we also see DP kill Ryan Reynolds before he makes Green Lantern!

While talking to CBR, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed how these ambitious sequences first came about. It turns out that it all started with the idea to give Deadpool time travel and see what he would do with it. It’s also interesting to note that Reynolds himself came up with the Green Lantern scene, continuing the Deadpool franchise’s tradition of making fun of his much-derided DC movie.

Here’s how the writers explained it:

“Long story short, when it came down to it, someone had the idea for the time machine, and we just thought, “Oh, that’s just too classic.” How meta can it be when Ryan Reynolds is going back in time to stop previous Ryan Reynolds from taking the Green Lantern movie? When Ryan had that idea of the Green Lantern bit, because he’s so willing to make fun of himself, we just lost it. We thought, that’s the funniest idea ever, and what a great idea to end the movie.”

As previously revealed, Deadpool 2‘s post-credits scene went through a few different ideas before these time traveling skits were settled on. However, it was always the plan to bulldoze through the fourth wall and treat the fans to something special. In fact, at one stage, both Chris Evans and the cast of the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot were set to appear. That would have been awesome, but it’s hard to complain when the extra scenes that we did get turned out so well.
