Supergirl Season Finale Synopsis Reveals The True Big Bad

Whenever a season of television winds down, it's not uncommon for networks to either release an incredibly vague synopsis, or to hold off a little longer than usual until the show in question reveals a particular plot point. Though one could say that today's example pertaining to Supergirl shows characteristics of both, it's more so the latter.

What most likely led to radio silence in this case was this past Monday’s reveal that the city of Argo survived Krypton’s destruction – as did Kara’s mother, Alura, and Serena, whose A.I. construct had been a mentor of sorts to Reign.

Based on the synopsis for the ominously titled season finale, “Battles Lost and Won,” we can only assume that Serena is, in fact, the true main villain:

SHOCKING SEASON FINALE – Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and team take on Serena in an epic battle for Earth. Jesse Warn directed the episode written by Robert Rovner & Jessica Queller (#323)

Take note that there’s no mention of Reign herself, so it’s very possible that Sam will be liberated from her Worldkiller persona some time before the finale, or she’ll be killed off altogether. Either way, it’s become apparent that she’s merely been a pawn in Serena’s twisted game.

Furthermore, it’s worth pointing out that Serena was also name-dropped in the description for the penultimate episode, “Make It Reign,” so do expect for major developments to occur over the course of the next few weeks. Again, that title of “Battles Lost and Won” makes it hard for one to retain a sense of optimism when it comes to the troubled Sam.

Supergirl airs on Monday nights on The CW, with the season finale set to arrive on June 18.
