Not to be outdone by a loose-lipped Zack Snyder, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has been quite generous with fans as of late, having recently confirmed Easter eggs and sharing some interesting trivia. Not surprisingly, the trend continues thanks to – what else? – social media.
In this case, a fan put it to the filmmaker that they thought Batman relived the murder of his parents in Crime Alley from decades prior when Deadshot’s daughter put herself between the two, thus causing the Dark Knight to think he should’ve done the same as a boy.
To be honest, this is actually a great theory, to which Ayer responded on Twitter with the following:
“Dang that’s dark. I like to think not.”
Regardless of whether or not that went through the Caped Crusader’s mind, it’s very possible that he at least saw some echoes of his childhood trauma in this parallel situation. Don’t forget, Bruce Wayne has replayed the tragedy in his head over and over again in countless comic books and animated outings, something we don’t quite see in the movies. Well, Batman Forever explored it generously, but it could come as a result of filmmakers simply not wanting to rely much on flashbacks.
Personally, I thought Batman and Deadshot’s mutual understanding to not come to blows in front of the young girl was due to their not wanting her to get caught in the middle of a potential bloodbath, and to not suffer a trauma of her own. If you can say one thing about Floyd Lawton, he’s not pure evil and does have a heart.
But if you’d like to delve deeper into the world of Suicide Squad, it’s recommended that you pick up the novelization written by the one and only Marv Wolfman. Not only does it allow you to examine the tale from various characters’ perspectives, but it hints at how the movie would’ve appeared had the reshoots not occurred.
