Jeff Goldblum Reveals If The Grandmaster Survived Avengers: Infinity War

It's now been over a month and I've just about gotten over seeing most of my favorite MCU characters collapse into a pile of ash in the finale of Avengers: Infinity War (oh, who I am kidding, I still get a lump in my throat when I think of poor Spidey). While the climax of the movie (and its post-credits scene) covered most of the MCU, there are a number of characters from other films whose survival is still up in the air. One of them's the extravagant, charismatic and capricious ruler of the planet Sakaar: The Grandmaster.

It’s now been over a month and I’ve just about gotten over seeing most of my favorite MCU characters collapse into a pile of ash in the finale of Avengers: Infinity War (oh, who I am kidding, I still get a lump in my throat when I think of poor Spidey). While the climax of the movie (and its post-credits scene) covered most of the MCU, there are a number of characters from other films whose survival is still up in the air. One of them’s the extravagant, charismatic and capricious ruler of the planet Sakaar: The Grandmaster.

Wonderfully played by Jeff Goldblum in last year’s Thor: Ragnarok, he was the kind of villain you secretly root for, even if it’s just to see him on screen a bit longer. When last we saw him, he was sheepishly emerging to face the music of a revolution against him, with his ultimate fate left to our imagination. Now, in an interview with Digital Spy, Goldblum’s given us his thoughts on whether the character’s still ticking:

“Grandmaster is more superhero than all of them put together. You can’t kill me, I’m like a vampire. I’m deathless and I can kill people by looking at them. Or I can resurrect them just by looking at them and thinking of them. I can do everything. Being able to do all of that, all I want to do is play games, so really I’m everywhere and nowhere. I’m like Keyser Söze.”

Well, it’s a very Goldblum answer, and very entertaining at that. I don’t know about you, but I certainly wish I had more opportunities to say things like “I’m deathless and I can kill people by looking at them.”

While the actor doesn’t have the final word on whether his character survived Avengers: Infinity War, maybe he’s signed a contract for future appearances that we don’t yet know about and this is his way of hinting to us that he’s not done with the MCU. I sincerely hope that’s the case, because the more Jeff Goldblum’s in a movie the better a time I’m having.
