Benedict Cumberbatch Teases More Appearances For Doctor Strange In The MCU

Avengers: Infinity War wiped out many characters we assumed had bright futures in the MCU - Black Panther, Spider-Man, nearly all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, etc. Fine, we know that they aren't gone for good, as they all have sequels set to arrive over the next few years, but it was still pretty shocking to see.

Avengers: Infinity War wiped out many characters we assumed had bright futures in the MCU – Black Panther, Spider-Man, nearly all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, etc. Fine, we know that they aren’t gone for good, as they all have sequels set to arrive over the next few years, but it was still pretty shocking to see.

One hero who actually doesn’t have any official future movies on the slate though is Doctor Strange, who also perished at Thanos’ hand. But surely he’s still set to return, right? We’ve only seen Benedict Cumberbatch play the part of the Master of the Mystic Arts for three movies since 2016 – Infinity War, plus Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok  – so he definitely has more to give the franchise, right?

Well, if it was up to Cumberbatch himself, he would put his Cloak of Levitation back on in a heartbeat. While speaking to Deadline, the British star stated “just try to stop me” when asked if he’d like to do more as Strange in the MCU. That being said, he wouldn’t be drawn on what plans are for his character, instead deferring to Kevin Feige as the one who’s really in the know.  He did, however, suggest that there are projects already “lined up” for him, saying:

“Oh, Strange? Just try to stop me. That’s all kind of lined up as far as I’m aware, but who knows? I mean, you know, the problem is, how does he get out of where he’s at. But that’s the only thing. I’m bits of dust at the moment as far as I understand.”

Continuing on, he said:

“You really have to ask (Marvel Studios president) Kevin Feige. But as far as wanting to do it, yeah, I would love to go back into that role.”

Though Doctor Strange 2 has been rumored since the first movie came out, it hasn’t been officially announced yet, though it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it pop up on Marvel’s slate for Phase Four. Likewise, we’re pretty confident that the Sorcerer Supreme will be resurrected in some form in Avengers 4. Evidence suggests that he knew what he was doing when he handed Thanos the Time Stone, after all. With Cumberbatch choosing his words carefully, though, it looks like we’ll have to wait until next May to find out for sure.
