Rian Johnson’s New Star Wars Trilogy May Hit Theaters In 2020

With Solo: A Star Wars Story limping out of theaters like a misfiring Millennium Falcon, fans bullying The Last Jedi's Kelly Marie Tran off of social media, and everyone finally deciding to stop whining about George Lucas, it looks like Star Wars fans worldwide are set for a period of calmness and stability.

Wait, what’s that? Rian Johnson’s new trilogy may start hitting our screens in two years’ time? Here we go again…

Ram Bergman, Johnson’s producing partner, speculated recently that we may see the first installment of this new Star Wars trilogy within the next two years. It was announced shortly before the release of The Last Jedi and when quizzed on when we can expect it to hit theaters by From the Grapevine, Bergman said:

“I can’t tell you because we don’t know yet. Maybe in two years; it’s just in the early stages.”

Other than the idea that Johnson’s trilogy will move away from the Skywalker saga (which many argue he was warming up for with The Last Jedi and his “let the past die” motto), there’s little else to go on story-wise, other than it’ll focus on a completely new set of characters. Still, we’re certainly intrigued to learn more, though when we’ll get the chance to do so remains unclear.

After all, with Episode IX being the only film in the franchise officially slated for release, there’s a lot up in the air at the moment, especially with the Solo: A Star Wars Story not being received quite as favorably as the Mouse House had hoped. However, with new trilogies coming from both Johnson and the Game of Thrones showrunners, as well as James Mangold’s reported Boba Fett standalone movie, there’s plenty more for Star Wars fans to get their teeth into in the years to come. Let’s just do it calmly, eh?
