Avengers: Infinity War Fan Art Imagines Tobey Maguire As Iron Spider

Tom Holland's third cinematic iteration of Spider-Man has been a huge hit with fans since he debuted in Captain America: Civil War, but there are those out there who are still loyal to the wallcrawlers that came before him. Some maintain that Andrew Garfield was unfairly treated by the defunct Amazing Spider-Man franchise while others swear that Tobey Maguire has never been topped for his performance in Sam Raimi's original trilogy of Spidey films.

Unfortunately for fans of those webslingers, neither Maguire nor Garfield’s Peter Parkers ever met other Marvel heroes. But what would it be like if, say, the former featured in Avengers: Infinity War instead of Holland, meaning he got to rub shoulders with the likes of Iron Man, Doctor Strange and the Guardians instead? Well, some new fan art – originally posted on Reddit – has given us a pretty good idea, as it replaces Holland with his predecessor and puts Maguire in the Iron Spider outfit.

Fans of the Raimi movies will know that, while the Avengers didn’t appear in the trilogy, there were references to other heroes that suggested Maguire’s Spider-Man existed in a wider Marvel universe. J. Jonah Jameson calls Doc Ock “Doctor Strange” in Spider-Man 2 for instance, until he realizes the name is taken and, later on in the film, Thomas Jane’s stunt double from The Punisher appears in the background of one scene, seemingly in character as Frank Castle. Then, of course, there’s that universe-crossing reference to Shazam.

But is it actually possible for Tobey Maguire to enter the MCU in a future Spider-Man movie? Well, probably not as Peter Parker, but Tom Holland has come up with a brilliant alternate role that Maguire could play. A vocal fan of his interpretation of Spidey, Holland suggested Maguire could play Uncle Ben in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. Fans got excited by the idea – obviously – but we haven’t heard any official noise about that happening just yet. Fingers crossed, though.
